A Bit about Each Group
Pre-K and Kindergarten
Our youngest students, the pre-K (Nitzanim) and Kinder (Gan), come together for 90 fun minutes, one afternoon a week, for their introduction to Jewish Life Cycle, Jewish Holidays, traditions and Torah Stories through music, dance, storytelling, games, cooking and art. Gan begin to learn Hebrew letters and words.
1st and 2nd Grades
In Alef (1st grade) and Bet (2nd grade), the children meet twice a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays), for two hours, including a recess. Our interactive software makes learning letters and reading Hebrew words incredibly successful. Students delight in Bible stories, Holiday Rituals, Customs and Blessings, Israel and the idea of helping those in need.
3rd-6th Grades
Gimmel (3rd), Daled (4th), Hei (5th) and Vav (6th) grade students learn through skits, games, projects, discussions and other creative models. They expand on Hebrew decoding and apply it to prayer and Torah text reading, specifically practicing the prayers for Shabbat. Students study about Israel’s history, geography and people, connecting it to the Biblical stories they learn.
Students continue to develop their Hebrew language skills as they master the Torah and Shabbat services. Students explore Jewish Identity, and how Judaism can inform their daily choices and actions.
After becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, students are welcomed into Hebrew High School. Our oldest students have dinner together and explore Jewish ethics, spirituality and living Jewishly in the modern world with honesty and openness. Once a month, the kids meet with the Rabbi. The kids are generally laughing when they are picked up so from what we can tell, the classes are lively, build community, inspirational and entertaining.
Gesher is our Teen Youth Group.
High school students can join the Gesher Social Action Alliance between the Pelham Jewish Center and Shaarei Tikveh of Scarsdale. The kids do acts of kindness, have social events and go on a 5-day trip of community service over February vacation. Last year, they went to Puerto Rico.
Madrichim (High School Aides)
Many of our 8th-12th grade students are Madrichim, or teachers aides. Madrichim assist with the lessons, help individual students with Hebrew and are terrific role models for younger students while receiving community service credit for school.
