Our Community : Social Action
Social Action

One of the basic tenets of Judaism is that a person is shaped by his actions. Tikkun Olam, healing our world, is a core value of our synagogue.  We believe that through concrete actions, we have the potential to change lives.  Join us in this undertaking by volunteering in one of our many programs:
Delivery of Hanukah packages to homebound seniors living in the Bronx.

The Midnight Run: We collect and bring clothes and food to homeless people in NYC . Contact Hildy through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 for more information or to volunteer.

The Hanukah Toy Drive: We collect toys for children who can’t afford them. Contact Marijane through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 for more information or to volunteer .

Bikkur Cholim:  We visit congregants who are ill or elderly.  The committee makes regular home visits, hospital visits, and telephone calls.  It is available to help with the needs of the sick, such as the provision of family meals while a parent is in the hospital.  The coordinator establishes a visiting schedule monthly, and coordinate visits to elderly or ailing congregants by it's committee members.  Members of the PJC community who are ill, elderly, and/or in need of company should contact Rabbi Schuck.  Contact the Bikkur Cholim coordinator, Jacqui through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 to volunteer .

Mt. Vernon Soup Kitchen: We will be cooking dinner for the soup kitchen four times this year. We will need 6 volunteers each time we do so. Our first date is October 16th.  To participate, contact Rachel through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 for more details.

Bronx Jewish Community Council Seniors Programs-  We will be delivering Hanukah packages to homebound seniors in the northern Bronx and lower Westchester on Dec. 18th. Contact Hildy through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 to volunteer.

“University Without Walls”: We are looking for people to run a class on any topic via telephone.   A class can last 45 minutes or three to four sessions. It can be a book group, a music session followed by a discussion, a lecture on a topic you know a lot about, or a discussion on a current events. Anywhere from 5-15 homebound seniors might participate. This program is sponsored by Dorot, a social service agency for the elderly and their caregivers.  Dorot will be sending a staff member to meet with interested congregants to provide details. Contact Hildy through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008, if interested.

The American Jewish World Service: The AJWS offers opportunities for groups of 15-20 people to volunteer in developing countries.  The PJC will send a group for a week with a leader from AJWS to Central America or Africa. The group will focus on Jewish principles of social action while helping to build houses or rebuild infrastructure. Please contact Joey through office@thepjc.org or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 if interested.

Mitzvah Day - A day of Social Action Events and Projects for the entire PJC community. This is a day dedicated to volunteer work targeting local and global needs.  Projects vary but can include preparing food for the soup kitchen, organizing packages for birthdays and holidays for local seniors or helping improve the physical environment of local service organizations.

Blood Drive - The Pelham Jewish Center will be hosting a midwinter blood drive in conjunction with the New York Blood Center.

Israel Action Committee is a group of volunteers interested in doing both direct service work and fund raising to support Israel and its citizens.  Contact Gloria through the PJC office at (914) 738-6008 to participate.

There are many opportunities at the PJC to help repair our world. It is easy to get involved – pick up the phone or drop an email.  For more information, contact Hildy,  the PJC Social Action Vice President, through office@thepjc.org, or call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008.
