Our Community : Getting Involved
Getting Involved!

There are many ways to get involved at the Pelham Jewish Center. You can attend Services, volunteer on a Social Action project, study in one of our Adult Education programs, or go to one of our social Events.

The more you involve yourself, the more meaningful your relationship with the synagogue will become.

In a small synagogue such as ours, each little contribution of time counts for a lot. You will always sense our gratitude, and we will always encourage you to lead us in new directions. You can assume the leadership role of a member of the board of directors or volunteer on one of its committees. The board of directors is made up of 10 volunteers, each serving two-year terms. We urge all our members to take an active role in synagogue life by joining the Board and being involved in the following areas:

  • President : Coordinates all actions of the board of directors. Serves as leader of and spokesman for the congregation.
  • Executive Vice President: Helps the president coordinate the actions of the board of directors.
  • Finance: Controls the finances of the PJC, including the billing, collection, disbursement and record keeping of operating revenues and expenses, preparation of monthly financial reports to the board and coordination of the annual budget.
  • Secretary: Maintains the minutes of monthly board meetings, and notifies board members of upcoming meetings.
  • Religious Practices: Works with the rabbi on issues of religious observance at the PJC and coordinates all Shabbat and holiday religious services.
  • Youth Education: Coordinates activities in the Learning Center and junior congregation with the rabbi and education director and oversees the activities of the youth group.
  • Adult Education: Conceives and coordinates classes, lectures, discussions and workshops; runs the Graenum Berger Book Club.
  • Social Action: Coordinates visits to members who are home bound or ill and develops programs to assist in satisfying the needs of the community.
  • Membership: Coordinates family information of current members, organizes social receptions for prospective members and coordinates membership retention.
  • House: Oversees maintenance of the main synagogue and rabbi’s residence; coordinates the needs of those who share synagogue space.
  • High Holiday Fund Raising: Organizes the annual high holiday fundraising campaign and coordinate fundraising for special capital needs to maintain or improve the building.
  • Social Programming and Other Fund Raising: Develops social events for the members, some of which are designed to raise money for the synagogue.
  • Communications: Creates the monthly synagogue newsletter, "The Hakol," maintains the PJC website and calendar, writes and sends weekly email announcements to the membership on upcoming events, creates flyers, and coordinates communications with regional media on synagogue events.  Please see a separate tab under, "Our Community," entitled, "PJC Board, Committee and Program Policies and Procedures," to read about specific communications' policies and procedures.

If you are interested in lay leadership opportunities, please call the synagogue at (914) 738-6008 or email us at office@thepjc.org.
